Getting started
What is My Money Kete?
Free help with money from Ngā Tāngata Microfinance, the charity that lends interest-free. There are two journeys, three tools you can try straight away, seven guides to keep, and a way to find a free financial mentor near you.
What's a kete?
A kete is a woven basket. Yours holds the useful things: the two journeys, the tools, the guides and a financial mentor near you. Take what you need.
Does it cost anything?
No. It's free, and so is a financial mentor.
Do I need a password?
No. You sign up with your first name and your email. We email you a link that brings you back, so there's nothing to remember.
How long does it take?
It's simple and easy, and you set the pace. Each journey can be done in one sitting, and you can stop and come back whenever you like.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes. It's made for phones, and it works on a computer too.
Can I try it before I sign up?
Yes. Money Style, Money Flow and Safety Net let you have a go straight away, with no sign-up and no information stored. The seven guides are free to download too.
Your information
What do you keep about me?
Your first name and email, your age band and how you heard about us if you tell us, and a few simple labels: your money style, which journey you've done, the guides you've taken and the next step you picked. We use them to send you your guides and next steps, and so the emails make sense for you.
What never leaves my phone?
The numbers you type: what comes in, what goes out, your debts and your savings. Your quiz answers and anything you write in your own words stay there too. None of it is sent to us or anyone else.
Do you track what I do on the site?
We count which screens are used, so we can see what's working and fix what isn't. That count never includes your name, your email or your numbers.
If I email a financial mentor from the site, what do they see?
The Email button opens your own email app with a short note already written. You can read it and change it, and nothing is sent unless you send it.
How do I stop the emails?
Every email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. One tap and they stop.
How do I have my details removed?
Email support@ntm.org.nz and ask. We'll remove your name, your email and your labels.
I'm using a shared phone. How do I clear it?
Tap "Start again" at the top of the journey. It clears your place from that phone, so the next person starts fresh.
The full privacy policy is on Ngā Tāngata's website.
Coming back
How do I come back to where I left off?
Use the link in any email from us. Or tap "Pick up where you left off" at the top of the home page, enter your email, and we'll send you a fresh link.
Is my progress saved?
Your money style, your dream and your next step are kept, so the link takes you back to them. The numbers you typed aren't kept anywhere, so you add them again when you come back.
Is this a login?
Not quite. There's no account and no password. The link in your email is how we know it's you.
Where does the email come from?
From kiaora@mymoneykete.nz, to the address you signed up with.
The email hasn't arrived. What now?
Give it a few minutes, then check your junk or promotions folder. We send one link every 15 minutes, so asking again straight away won't send another. Still nothing? Email support@ntm.org.nz.
How long does the link work for?
It keeps working. The link in any of our emails will bring you back.
Can I carry on on another phone or computer?
Yes. On the new device, tap "Pick up where you left off" and open the link we email you there. Your numbers don't come with you, so you add them again.
The journeys, tools and guides
What are the two journeys?
You and your money: your dream, your money style, what's on your mind, and your result.
Manage your spending, saving and debt: your money picture, your safety net, one step to take, and staying on track.
Which one should I start with?
Either. Start with whatever you need most. When you finish one, the other is there for you.
Do I need exact numbers?
No. Rough numbers are fine. If your pay goes up and down, use a quieter week.
I don't have any debt. Is the second journey still for me?
Yes. Choose saving instead, and your step is about building a safety net.
What are the tools?
Money Style shows how you view and react to money. Money Flow shows where your money goes. Safety Net shows how small, regular amounts add up. You can try all three without signing up.
What are the guides?
Seven free guides to download, print, or pass on to someone who needs them. You'll find them all on the home page.
Is this financial advice?
No. It's information to help you think about your money. For advice on your own situation, talk to a free financial mentor.
Financial mentors and interest-free loans
What's a financial mentor?
Someone at a free budgeting service near you who helps you work through your money. It's free and confidential, and they're on your side. Most people expect a telling-off. That isn't what happens.
Do I have to see a financial mentor?
No. Everything here works on your own. A financial mentor is there when you want one, and you'll need one if you apply for an interest-free loan.
How do I find one near me?
Tap "Find a financial mentor near you", choose your region and search your suburb or town. You can email or call the service you choose. Or let Ngā Tāngata match you with a financial mentor.
What do I take to my first meeting?
Your one-page summary, if you made one at the end of the second journey. The first meeting starts with you, not your numbers.
Can I get an interest-free loan?
Ngā Tāngata's Little Loans have no interest and no fees, up to $5,000. You work with a financial mentor first: after three sessions, if a loan is right for you, your financial mentor helps you apply. They aren't for vehicles or bank debts. Who can apply, and how, is on the Little Loans page.
Can I talk to someone right now?
For free help with money, call MoneyTalks on 0800 345 123 or text 4029. There's no live chat on this site.
Something not working?
Who do I tell?
